State Adoption

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) are a fire prevention safety requirement in the current 2017 National Electrical Code® (NEC®). The NEC® requirement includes installation of AFCIs in all new home construction including bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, sun rooms, othering gathering places and in kitchen and laundry areas.

As the map below indicates, 48 states currently have established residential and/or electrical codes that require AFCI use in all new homebuilding. Each state varies as to its own individual electrical code requirements. Indiana and Michigan are the only states that do not require these life-saving devices in new home construction.
