The 1999-2005 versions of the National Electrical Code® (NEC®) require that AFCIs be installed in bedrooms during all new home construction. The 2008 NEC® expanded its requirement to include additional areas of the home, including living rooms, dining rooms, sun rooms and other gathering places – providing the home with the best electrical fire protection possible. Currently, AFCIs are required in 49 out of 50 states, with Indiana yet to bring these important and life-saving devices into new homes. See the below map to find out what version of the NEC your state has adopted. Note: The “L” on some of the states indicates that new codes are adopted at the local level rather than by a state governing body.
